 Talk Therapy vs EMDR

When people think of therapy, they typically imagine talk therapy. In talk therapy, clients are supported in processing their thoughts by identifying their feelings, and building self-awareness. It’s a place to find safety and security in yourself with professional guidance. In talk therapy, you’re provided with tools, education, and validation to assist you in becoming the best version of yourself.

I keep hearing about EMDR. What is it?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based alternative to traditional talk therapy for resolving trauma and returning to a sense of normalcy.

We engage a different part of our brain when we use bilateral eye movements. We are then able to re-interpret traumatic memories. In a traumatic moment we may not be able to process information the way we typically do in an de-escalated state. EMDR can give people the opportunity to process and re-approach past events. Many people experience a decrease in their distress related to past trauma following EMDR.
